Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about property tax protests in Texas and how FightYourTax.ai can help.
About property tax protests
What is a property tax protest?−
Every year, your county appraisal district sets an appraised value for your home. If you think that value is too high, you have the legal right to protest it. A successful protest means a lower appraised value, which means lower property taxes. In Texas, about 70% of homeowners who protest get some reduction.
What does "equity" mean in a property tax protest?+
An equity (or "unequal appraisal") argument says: "comparable properties in my area are appraised lower than mine — my home should be valued the same way." This is the most common and effective protest strategy. Our AI engine scans HCAD's full database of over 1.6 million properties to find the strongest comparable properties and calculates professional-grade adjustments to prove the disparity.
Do I have to go to a hearing?+
Yes — to get the reduction, you'll need to present your evidence at an informal hearing (phone or in person) and possibly a formal ARB hearing if needed. Our evidence package is designed to be presented as-is — you hand it to the appraiser and walk through the key points. Our free Protest Guide covers exactly what to say and what to expect.
What if the protest doesn't work?+
If your informal hearing doesn't result in a reduction, you can escalate to a formal ARB hearing at no additional cost — same evidence, different review panel. Even if the formal hearing doesn't work, you lose nothing except the fee and your time. There's no penalty for protesting, and you can try again next year.
About FightYourTax.ai
How is this different from hiring a consultant?+
Consultants typically charge a flat fee ($300+) plus 25–50% of your savings. We charge a $75 early-bird fee (regular $99) with no percentage cut. Our AI engine uses the same appraisal district data and comparable property methodology that consultants use — but it scans HCAD's full database automatically. The difference is you present the case yourself instead of paying someone to do it for you.
What if I've never protested before?+
That's exactly who we built this for. Our Protest Guide walks you through every step — from filing the initial protest to what to expect in the hearing room. The evidence package does the analytical heavy lifting. You just need to show up, present the document, and answer any questions.
What's included in the evidence package?+
Your package includes: an AI-powered comparable property analysis with professional-grade adjustments (size, age, grade, features); market trend data from Zillow, HCAD & other sources; a property condition assessment with sourced repair cost deductions (if applicable); and a print-ready PDF you can hand directly to the appraiser at your hearing. We also provide a free online Protest Guide with hearing tips, presentation strategy, and step-by-step instructions.
Is this legal advice?+
No. FightYourTax.ai provides data analysis and educational materials to help homeowners understand their property tax appraisal and exercise their legal right to protest. We do not provide legal or tax advice. Our evidence packages are analytical tools based on public data.
